Punked

Yeah, it's anarchy man!!!
Ok, I'm ready to wave the white flag. I missed my run on Saturday as my flights got delayed and I didn't get back into Austin until nearly midnight.  Then this morning I did 7 miles in about 1000% humidity and just struggled.  That's not much different to the pattern of last year, but I think I am going to modify my training plan to just survive this bitch of a summer. Thanks to Clea for pulling me through the run - I have no idea how she managed to do 15 in these conditions yesterday, except to say she's a lot tougher than me!!!

Usually when I have a run like that, I respond with beatings beatings beatings.  Which is why I'm about to do an hour of Bob Harper "Inside Out" hell - it's probably about time I put the cross training regime back in place anyway.  Fortunately the beatings will be limited as we're heading to Colorado later this week.  Do you think I'm looking forward to running in low humidity in the mountains?  You bet I am!!!

Here are some pictures from the rest of the weekend.

I'm signed up for San Antonio, so now it's time for me to find a little speed between now and then. The good news is that I got a good base with 4 50ks and one marathon I've already run this year. What's the best way to get my speed up? Any suggestions?

Hey Derek. You could always do some track work - 400, 800, 1600 repeats, pyramids or the like. But I find that pretty boring. What I usually do is start pushing the pace on some of the shorter midweek runs about 6-8 weeks out. I find that flows into my long runs and builds me up psychologically to run a faster pace on race day. Kind of linear periodization to peak at just the right time.

You've got a hella busy schedule with the new job. Take it easy on yourself. These 105 degree days make 98 seem like jacket weather if you get out in it enough. Of course, pace be damned in this heat is the unfortunate truth. No wonder marathons aren't scheduled in the Summer. All my quality runs (not the long runs, though) are done on the...dreadmill, since they're not quality in 105 or even 80 degrees + 120% humidity. The bad news is you're going to lose all the heat acclimation in CO, but I wouldn't trade that nice, cool, DRY weather for this stuff.
